Last week we assessed general myofascial mobility of the elbow for anyone with elbow struggles (have you tried the drills on yourself yet?) - today we progress to targeting the lateral elbow joint specifically for mobility barriers that need improvement if you have anything like what is generally named as “Tennis Elbow”.
“Tennis Elbow” is more technically called “Lateral Epicondylalgia" by the experts because it affects many people people who don’t play tennis and simply means any non-descript lateral elbow pain in the region of the lateral epicondyle of the elbow.
These assessments I’m giving you are actually quite functional rather than clinical, and can be done by anyone safely - just take note of pain levels so as not to aggravate any injuries of course..
Just this week I assessed a client with Lateral Elbow pain who couldn’t do active elbow extension without pain on his lateral elbow…he failed miserably with those tests of course!
So when we have Tennis Elbow pain, how do we begin helping safely - especially if we are a Fitness Professional?
Well I began simply with last week’s Myofascial Self-Assessment, which was very limited and positive for pain / tightness. I then spent no more than 3-4 minutes doing simple trigger point / myofascial rolling of his wrist extensors and after that he was temporarily pain-free with elbow extension. True! He was pretty ecstatic... I then prescribed for him to do his own until I see him again, to see if he can work hard to keep it in less pain. Managing our own pain levels is critical because nothing happens quickly in Elbow-land.
If that had failed to improve pain levels however, I would have used today’s Gym Junkie’s Lateral Elbow Self-Assessment - to assess if his Superior Radio-ulnar Joint is involved in his “Tennis Elbow”.
That’s in today’s video:
