Medial Tubing Pull for Grumpy Quads

I hope I didn’t confuse you last week with the ball-squeeze debate… let me say clearly that I believe it is better for activating VMO to have the tubing AROUND THE OUTSIDE of the knees.

This actually increases the activation of the VMO, which shows itself in increased EMG readings (see todays video from 2011 in Iceland where we were trialling different techniques with Physio friends Stefan and Einar). Up to 25% increase in VMO activation happened simply with applying tubing in a medial direction.

What also happens with the medially pulled tubing, is:
  • Often an immediate reduction in pain (presumably from VMO firing up and supporting the soft tissues of the anterior knee).
  • Improvement in leg alignment as the brain corrects to a better knee over toe position
  • Activation of posterior Gluteus Medius and Hip “Rotator Cuff” (lateral rotators)
  • Improved feeling of knee position and awareness (“proprioception”).

So - no harm in using / trialling it will ALL Grumpy Knees. Just so long as you haven’t loaded up the client to heavily to begin with (for example do you have them doing a deep lunge when in actual fact they are only strong enough for a squat..). Easy mistakes to make.

Check out below all the Taiwan, HK, and Aussie courses we have for you coming up in the next month or two!

And I will see hopefully a few of you in 2 weeks in Jakarta for GOIFEX 2017!
