Switching ON Grumpy Quads 9

 

Let’s just pause for a deep breath in this series on Grumpy Knees…we have spent a good few newsletters now on Quad releasing, trigger points, R1/R2, and stretching, and how have you found this? Anything new for you? What do you find hardest to do if you have Grumpy Knees?

No video today, instead just want to intro a new direction for us: activation and strengthening of Quads. 

The challenging reality we face and discussed earlier was that "Stubborn Quadriceps are surprisingly vulnerable to inhibition and atrophy, and doesn’t like operating when pain and swelling is present. It’s a real Catch-22…weak quads result in knee problems, which result in weak quads. Chicken and egg.”! 

And of course we all have some confusion around these issues, like Marissa from Indonesia wrote a while back:

    Dear Ulrik
Can you help me to understand more. …  But lil confused bout the relationships between length of muscle and muscle tightness and weaknesses.  I read in some blog tightness of muscle means the muscle is weak and needs to be strengthened. So I think there are two different matters; tight but short or tight muscle but long, weak muscle that is short and weak muscle that is being pulled too much 
by other strong antagonist muscles. So have you any blog or any book or any link I can read so I can understand more sir. Thank you so much. Kind regards  Marissa 





Probably from our experience, the Quads get TIGHT and INHIBITED as a general rule. They are not a postural muscle, which tends to get long and weak, thereby worsening the posture through being inhibited. Bottom line Marissa, is that none of us has all the answers. Except that everyone who has knee pain needs to find their own method for Firing Up Lazy Inhibited Quads. Turning on the engine somehow without flaring up their knee pain. 

Remember that question we asked you way back: 

 Q4 Have you found any ways to strengthen your Quads that 
a) don’t aggravate your knee, and that 
b) really make your Quads burn and come alive?

That’s the rub; the "Holy Grail" for your Grumpy Knee!
