Quite a few trainers have written in with various exercises in the gym that have triggered or continue to aggravate their elbow:
Triceps Extensions (TRX, Standing Machine or Skull crushers),
Kipping / Pull-ups,
Back Squats and Romanian Deadlift (pronated hand),
Bicep curl with a straight bar,
... the list goes on!
Which ones fit your experience? Have we missed any obvious or weird ones - pls just shoot me a quick reply via the contact form below with which exercise aggravates yours?
If we start delving into Gym-related Elbow Pain, compared to Sports-related like the obvious tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow types, we discover that there is comparatively little research or academic writing delving into Gym Junkie’s Elbow Pain. So we are learning as we go here people!
Looking for patterns, unpacking biomechanics, training error, identifying sub-groups (for example, are Body Builders more or less likely to get elbow pain than Cross Fitters?)… this gets very interesting.
Have you come across any good articles or writing on Elbow Pain in the Gym? Would love to see it..
Gym Aggravators Last week I put together a critical list of elements that increase the chances of you getting work-related Elbow Pain, so here is my small list of key things to look for in Gym-related Elbow Pain:
how bad is the client’s Scapular Retraction? Weak shoulders? Do they also have shoulder or neck problems?
in what exercises can they NOT keep their wrist in neutral grip? Are they over-flexed on the pulling movements, and over-extended on pushing?
is pain increased (or decreased) depending on how much pronation / supination of their elbow (Superior Radio-ulnar Joint) they have in a particular exercise?
do rapid changes of direction feature in their exercise?
did they commit Training Error and simply do too much too soon? And now it re-aggravates everytime that exercise is attempted?
Have I missed anything…?
Each of these elements is a world of complexity in itself - I am aware of that…but you’ve gotta helicopter up high to see the big ingredients that are usually somewhere in there. Or in combination with another element. Each has its own fix journey.
Can you figure it out for your client? Slowly turn the ship around...
